People in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes who live with a long-term health condition have been urged to get a flu vaccination as the number of cases continues to rise across England.

Flu is a highly infectious disease and can lead to serious complications for those living with a long-term health condition, such as respiratory and heart conditions, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or a chronic neurological disease such as multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy.

An analysis by Public Health England in 2020 showed that six in every 10 deaths from flu were seen in people with underlying conditions.

Dr Sarah Whiteman, Chief Medical Director at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:

“Having a flu jab is the best way to protect yourself and those closest to you.  With the holiday season fast approaching, there is still time to get protected before the gatherings with family and friends which you’re probably looking forward to.

“Some people with long-term health conditions may not view themselves as being at increased risk of serious illness from flu, especially if their condition is not related to the respiratory system, but people with cardiovascular problems, kidney or liver disease, or a weakened immune system, are also much more likely to develop complications from flu.

“Our immune system is made up of lots of different organs, and a condition which affects any of them can make us more vulnerable to infections such as flu.

“And with COVID-19 still circulating, it’s important to get all of your jabs.  It’s not too late for eligible people to get their free NHS flu vaccination: just speak to your pharmacist or your family doctor’s surgery for information.”
