NHS staff in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes are being thanked for covering gaps in rotas during the ongoing industrial action by junior doctors.

The junior doctors’ strike began on Tuesday 11 April and is set to end at 7am on Saturday 15 April. The strike is part of the ongoing dispute between the British Medical Association and the government over pay and conditions.

Dr Sarah Whiteman, Chief Medical Director at NHS Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said: “I know first-hand how tough it can be to work extra shifts, especially during a time of heightened stress and uncertainty.

“NHS staff across professions – including nurses, advance care practitioners, paramedics, therapist, and pharmacists – have stepped up to support consultants and administrative staff. They’re coping, but we know it has taken its toll.”

Dr Whiteman, who has also covered shifts in hospital Emergency Departments during the strikes, added: “We fully support our colleagues, whether they are taking part in strike action or not, and our health and care system is doing everything it can to provide safe services to patients.

“I hope that we see a resolution to pay disputes for staff soon, so that normal services can be resumed.

“I am extremely grateful to my colleagues who have stepped up to cover the gaps in rotas in the past week. Their commitment to delivering patient care during this difficult time is truly commendable.”

Local people are being encouraged to think carefully before using NHS services during the industrial action.

People are reminded that they should only attend an accident and emergency department if they require emergency, life-saving care.

GP practices and pharmacies will be running as usual during the strike, and people can also visit NHS 111 online (111.nhs.uk) or call NHS 111 for urgent medical help and advice.
