How Primary Care organisations and colleagues in BLMK can move towards environmentally sustainable healthcare

***NEW CONTENT 21 May 2026***

The BLMK ICS Green Plan 2025-32 sets out the strategy and delivery to support our vision statement “People, Places and Planet” – delivering the best possible health for all and the highest value healthcare, which can only be achieved by living in harmony with our environment

Why This Matters for Primary Care

Primary Care is often the first point of contact for patients, and it is increasingly affected by health impacts linked to climate change. Moving towards more sustainable healthcare will help reduce pressure on services while improving outcomes.

Sustainable changes in Primary Care can bring clear benefits:

  • More digital services frees up staff time
  • Better overall health reduces demand for appointments and prescriptions
  • Reduced use of single-use items lowers waste and disposal costs
  • Improved energy efficiency cuts utility bills

To help teams across Primary Care take action, a set of practical resources has been developed. These provide both the case for change and tools to support implementation:

The draft documents will be updated following approval.
