As January drags on and festive cheer feels like a distant memory, Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board is encouraging people to take part in Move It Monday, a day dedicated to getting active, lifting spirits, and starting the year with a healthy step forward.

In recent years, Monday 20 January has gained a reputation as ‘Blue Monday’ and is often dubbed the most depressing day of the year, but local health bosses are looking to flip the narrative this year, by encouraging people from across the area to make a healthy start, connect with friends and get active.

Nicky Poulain, Chief of Primary Care and the Executive lead for prevention for Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board said:

“The link between physical activity and wellbeing is proven. It can help improve low mood, reduce stress and boost physical health including preventing high blood pressure and diabetes. That’s why we’re encouraging people, on what is traditionally the bleakest day of the year, to get active, get their heart rate up and release endorphins. It will really help people to feel better.”

“It’s not just about hitting the gym, we want the day to be inclusive, with something for everyone to try –whether that’s energising group exercise classes or gentler activities like seated aerobics or walking football. Even going for a walk in the fresh air with a friend could really help to boost someone’s mood.

She added: “We are encouraging local groups and individuals to take part in the campaign and share their efforts with us online. Participants can post photos and updates using the hashtag #BLMKMoveItMonday, inspiring others to join a movement. It doesn’t have to stop on Monday either – I’m running the park run in Wardown, Luton on 25 January. Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate – feel free to join me to blow away those cobwebs.”

Whether you’re taking part in an organised activity, creating your own fitness challenge, or simply going for a walk with friends, there are plenty of ways to join Move It Monday. Local community groups, schools, leisure centres, and clubs have already signed up to the new year challenge. For more information, please contact blmkicb.communications@nhs.net
