90% of patients saw at least one health improvement over 12 weeks, and 92% would recommend it

Individual assessments of gait (walking pattern) to improve balance and stability
Using wireless sensors, GaitSmart records an individual’s movements over 10 to 15 steps. The system compares the readings to ‘healthy’ gait profiles in just a few minutes, to produce a report suggesting exercises to improve strength, stability or balance – reducing the risk of a fall.
The test can be carried out virtually anywhere, is quick and easy for trained staff to use in a range of locations, and is suitable for people using walking aids. Repeating the tests over a period of time gives the opportunity to monitor progress and modify the exercise plan if needed.
Over a 15-month pilot funded by NHS England, we trialled GaitSmart in primary, secondary, and community care. Health Innovation East was commissioned to evaluate uptake, clinical outcomes, and user experience.
- 90% of the patients improved in at least one measure, while 48% improved in all four outcomes (GaitSmart score, gait speed, stride duration and joint angle).
- 92% of patients who answered a survey would recommend GaitSmart to others experiencing walking or rehabilitation difficulties.
- 76% reported some or significant improvement in their mobility.
Several of the sites in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes will continue using GaitSmart until at least March 2026.
