A leading local pharmacist is encouraging residents to make use of the Pharmacy First service for minor illnesses and condition this winter and avoid unnecessary visits to hospital.

Most community pharmacies across the region have a consultation room, where they can offer a private consultation and provide quick and convenient care. This includes prescribing antibiotics for certain conditions, without the need to visit a GP.

The Pharmacy First service enables community pharmacists to manage seven common conditions which include:

  • Earache (for those aged 1-17 years);
  • Impetigo (for those aged 1 year and over);
  • Infected insect bites (for those aged 1 year and over);
  • Shingles (for those aged 18 and over);
  • Sinusitis (for those aged 12 and over);
  • Sore throat (for those aged 5 and over);
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (for women aged 16 to 64).

Residents can access the Pharmacy First service by visiting their local pharmacy.  Pharmacists can assess the condition, provide self-care advice and, if necessary, prescribe antibiotics. This service aims to reduce the pressure on GP services and hospitals this Winter and ensures patients receive timely care.

Fiona Garnett, associate director of pharmacy and medicines optimisation at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:

“Pharmacy First is an invaluable resource for our community, especially during the winter months when healthcare services are often in high demand.

“By allowing residents to access care for minor illnesses quickly and conveniently, we can alleviate pressure on other services and ensure that everyone receives the treatment they need in good time.  Pharmacy First not only helps patients get back on their feet faster but also ensures that our healthcare system runs more efficiently, providing high-quality care for everyone in our area.” Almost all pharmacies in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes offer the Pharmacy First service, and more information is available on the NHS website.
