Autistic adults and those with learning disabilities were invited to attend an event to learn more about breast screening and the importance of early diagnosis of breast cancer.

An X-ray machine being showcased to neurodiverse individuals at the Fujifilm and Autism Bedfordshire event.

The event, held on 2 April at Fujifilm’s UK headquarters in Bedford, was led by Autism Bedfordshire, who demonstrated a range of healthcare technologies and innovations, including ultrasound, X-ray, and other diagnostic machines. The aim was to demystify the equipment, reduce anxiety about medical settings, and help prepare attendees for future healthcare appointments.

Dr Roshan Jayalath, clinical lead for mental health, learning disabilities and autism at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:

“The visit from Autism Bedfordshire to Fujifilm was important to facilitate conversations with neurodiverse individuals and raise awareness around breast screening and early cancer diagnosis. It’s vital that all services adapt to remove barriers to healthcare access. We’re working with local organisations to close the gap in healthy life expectancy for those with neurodivergent conditions, or learning and physical disabilities, so that health inequalities are reduced, and outcomes improved for everyone in our communities.”

Heather Wildsmith, project development team manager at Autism Bedfordshire, said:

“It was a wonderful event. The people who attended really appreciated being hands-on with the machines, asking questions about what to expect and how the equipment works. Everything was explained clearly, and they left feeling more prepared. My thanks go to everyone involved in organising the event.”
