A charity in Bedford is helping to rebuild lives in their local community, thanks to support from a cost of living grant.

The King’s Arms Project is a charity in Bedford dedicated to tackling homelessness and social isolation, empowering people to rebuild their lives and find a sense of belonging. With over 30 years of experience, they provide professional advice, innovative solutions, and person-centred care to those at risk.

Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board and Bedford Borough Council awarded a grant of £22,143 to help The King’s Arms Project to fund three vital members of staff, including an Outreach Case Worker, a Learning & Engagement Officer for their Pathways Team, and a Language Club Leader for their English for Speakers of other Languages Club (ESOL). These roles will enable the King’s Arms Project to increase the level of support for their service users.

The charity’s “Pathways” services provide a variety of courses and experiences that promote self-confidence and personal growth. They also provide Pathways Recovery Coaching, offering structured support for individuals recovering from homelessness, mental health issues, and substance misuse. The Outreach team plays a crucial role, offering hope and assistance to marginalised clients through dedicated support and outreach efforts in the community.

Adam’s journey with the Kings Arms Project:

Adam* was referred to the King’s Arms Project’s outreach team while facing homelessness. He had various support needs, likely stemming from adverse childhood experiences. Despite being moved between several short-term housing options that exacerbated his challenges, the outreach team remained dedicated to assisting him. They provided practical support, including help with bank accounts, probation appointments, doctors’ visits, and ensuring access to food.

A significant turning point occurred when Adam had a meeting with the Pathways team. This led to him participating in the Pathways community group known as Coffee and Connect. This welcoming gathering allowed clients to enjoy coffee, cake, play games, and interact with staff members from the accommodation, outreach, and Pathways teams. Adam embraced this opportunity, which eventually led to his involvement in setting up the Coffee and Connect sessions. He even undertook a Level 1 course in Food Safety and Hygiene, taking pride in arranging baked goods and preparing beverages for the Pathways community.

Following the support from the Kings Arms Project, Adam has continued to engage with them by regularly attending the Coffee and Connect group and continues to receive support from the Outreach Team.

Stuart McCaw, Fundraising Manager,, King’s Arms Project, said:

“Our mission at the King’s Arms Project is to bring hope and support to the most marginalised individuals in our community. Through our range of services, we aim to empower people facing homelessness and social isolation to rebuild their lives.

“This funding has enabled us to increase the level of support that we are able to offer local people who may be facing similar problems to Adam.”
