As part of National Walking Month this May, Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (ICB) has been encouraging people to get walking, improving health and wellbeing whilst also tackling social isolation in the community.

Enjoying a walk in your local park is a great way to take advantage of fine weather, and it’s so good for you.

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve both physical and mental health.  Whether it’s a short stroll in a park or a brisk walk through the countryside, regular walking helps to reduce the risk of long-term health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.  It also plays a key role in improving mental wellbeing, reducing stress and building social connections.

The ICB’s Central Bedfordshire place team is actively working with local organisations to promote walking. From organised walking groups to accessible walking routes and community-led events, their efforts are designed to make walking part of daily life for people of all ages and abilities.

Dr Chirag Bakhai, clinical lead for long term conditions at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes ICB, said:

“Getting active in ways that work for you is a powerful way to support both physical and mental health.  Brisk walking has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of conditions like diabetes and hypertension, while also enhancing mental wellbeing.

“With May being National Walking Month, there’s no better time to celebrate the efforts of the Central Bedfordshire Place team to get people moving. Their commitment not only promotes healthier lifestyles but also helps tackle social isolation by bringing communities together, one step at a time.”

As the campaign continues, the ICB encourages residents to seek opportunities to get moving, connect with others, and experience the many benefits of walking, during May and well beyond.
