Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board has welcomed the announcement of Universal Studios’ plan to redevelop the Kempston Hardwick brickworks site to become a theme park, and the Government’s approval of a new terminal at Luton Airport which will double its passenger numbers over the next 20 years.

Felicity Cox, chief executive of Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:

“The links between employment and health are well established, as people in fulfilling jobs are more likely to enjoy strong social networks, better mental health and longer life expectancy, so we’re delighted by the recent good economic news for Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes.

“The Universal Studios proposal for a theme park in Kempston Hardwick and last week’s announcement about the expansion of Luton Airport, which was backed by the ICB board in 2023, will both lead to an increase in local employment opportunities during both the construction and operation phases.

“We will work closely with our partners to manage the varied implications of expansion on the local health system, public health and the local environment.

“We congratulate all those who have brought these major developments to the area and look forward to working with our partners in all sectors of the local economy as they progress.”
