L is an 18-year-old who was struggling to communicate with autism professionals.

She started working with a keyworker, who supported her over a few months. The keyworker service provides the most vulnerable children and young people in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes with a learning disability, autism (or both) and their families with a dedicated keyworker to make sure that they are listened to so they are involved fully in their plans, and ensure that they receive the right care at the right time.

The keyworkers also work with children and their families to provide support and help them to navigate local services, including health, social care and education.

L was recently discharged following a positive response after a series of visits. She was struggling to communicate with other professionals but felt comfortable with Autism Bedfordshire and now has a suitable package in place to support her.

Meetings have been set up for L to attend within her community and a personal health budget provided that gives her the flexibility to fund things that would help improve her health and wellbeing needs. She also joined a farm project and a workshop was arranged for her parents to attend to help them understand autism and mental health.

L’s parent said “I can’t thank Autism Bedfordshire enough for the support that they have given me and L in the last few weeks. Your knowledge of Autism Spectrum Condition and being interested in L as an individual has had a huge impact. It has been lovely to see L smile again… she finally feels that she does have a voice which is really important.
