Eligible patients have been urged to come forward and reserve an appointment as the COVID-19 spring vaccination programme opens for bookings.

The number of people qualifying for a vaccination under for this programme is smaller than before, with the following groups being eligible:

  • People aged over 75 years;
  • People aged 5 to 74 years with a weakened immune system.

Those who live in a residential care home for older adults are also eligible, but will be offered a vaccination at their home and do not need to book an appointment.

The most recent programme saw over 245,000 people in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes receive a COVID-19 vaccination between September and February.

Dr Sarah Whiteman, Chief Medical Director at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:

“Our advice remains the same: getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against serious illness.  While many people might think that COVID is over, it is still very much with us!

“The spring COVID-19 vaccination programme is aimed at those who are at highest risk of severe illness and need to keep their immunity topped up.  It will bridge the gap before the planned autumn programme, ensuring the most vulnerable are well protected throughout the summer.

“Bookings are now open for those who are eligible for the spring vaccination programme.  The first appointments are available from 17 April and you can now book via the National Booking Service online or by calling 119.

Meanwhile, it has also been announced that healthy people aged between 5 and 49 who have not yet come forward for their primary course COVID-19 vaccinations will no longer be able to access vaccinations after 30 June 2023.

Addressing those patients, Dr Whiteman added:

“There are lots of reasons why you may not have had the first two doses of a COVID-19 vaccination.  Perhaps you missed an appointment, or maybe you originally said no but have changed your mind because someone you know has been seriously ill with COVID.

“Whatever the reason, you now have only a short time to book in for your primary doses before the opportunity comes to an end.”
