Home » News » New RSV vaccine rolled out across Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes
RSV is a common virus that causes respiratory infections, such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. While most individuals recover without complications, RSV can lead to severe illness in babies, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and auto-immune disorders.
Dr Ian Reckless, chief medical officer at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:
“The rollout of the RSV vaccine will make a big difference to many people this winter. Every year, people are admitted to hospital because of respiratory illnesses, which can have a long-term impact, especially for older people who may lose their independence after a stay in hospital.
“It is also available for pregnant women and provides crucial protection for babies during the first few months of life.
“This year, we are encouraging those who are eligible to book their vaccination as soon as possible and prepare for the winter.”
The RSV vaccine is recommended for pregnant women from 28 weeks’ gestation to help protect babies after birth, and adults aged 75 to 79.
The vaccine is being rolled out for pregnant women during the 28-week antenatal appointment and can be administered up until labour to ensure the best protection for both mother and baby. Older adults be contacted by their GP surgery to schedule their vaccination.
