As the UK is expecting cold temperatures over the next week with the possibility of snow and ice, Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (BLMK ICB) is urging residents to take steps to stay well and be prepared.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has used an amber level cold health alert covering the East of England, valid from 12:00 noon on Thursday 2 January to 12:00 noon on Wednesday 8 January. The Met Office advises that temperatures are likely to be below average, especially overnight, with frost and ice set to cause a problem.

Exposure to cold weather can pose serious health risks, especially for the more vulnerable among us such as older people, young children, and those with long-term health conditions.

Key tips for staying well in cold weather:

  • Keep your house warm: Ensure your home is heated to at least 18°C, particularly in rooms you spend a lot of time in, such as the living room and bedroom. Simple measures like reducing draughts and wearing several layers of clothing can make a difference.
  • Get vaccinated: It’s crucial to get your Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations if you’re eligible. Vaccinations help protect against severe symptoms and reduce the risk of illness.
  • Stay active and eat well: Keeping active and eating a balanced diet can help boost your immune system and keep you healthy during the winter months.
  • Be prepared: Stock up on cold and sore throat remedies and know when to seek medical advice. The NHS app can provide quick and trusted advice if you’re feeling unwell. Don’t forget, your local pharmacy can treat common conditions like earache and sore throat without a GP appointment.
  • Look after vulnerable loved ones: Don’t forget that some people are more vulnerable to the effects of cold weather, so it’s a good idea to check in with family, friends and neighbours who might struggle over the next few days.

Dr Ian Reckless, Chief Medical Officer at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board added: “Cold weather can significantly increase the risk of serious health issues, especially for vulnerable groups. By staying prepared and keeping warm, we can prevent life-threatening conditions like hypothermia, frostbite, and respiratory illnesses. Let’s protect our community and ensure everyone’s safety during the winter months.”

As the cold weather approaches, we are also reminding residents on the availability of warm, inviting spaces across Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes. These spaces are designed to provide a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment for anyone looking to stay warm during the day while saving on heating costs. Beyond just offering warmth, these spaces also provide access to assistance, support, and friendship, as well as opportunities to learn new skills. Information about the nearest locations can be found here.
