The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has used an amber level cold health alert covering the East of England, valid from 12:00 noon on Thursday 2 January to 12:00 noon on Wednesday 8 January. The Met Office advises that temperatures are likely to be below average, especially overnight, with frost and ice set to cause a problem.
Exposure to cold weather can pose serious health risks, especially for the more vulnerable among us such as older people, young children, and those with long-term health conditions.
Key tips for staying well in cold weather:
Dr Ian Reckless, Chief Medical Officer at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board added: “Cold weather can significantly increase the risk of serious health issues, especially for vulnerable groups. By staying prepared and keeping warm, we can prevent life-threatening conditions like hypothermia, frostbite, and respiratory illnesses. Let’s protect our community and ensure everyone’s safety during the winter months.”
As the cold weather approaches, we are also reminding residents on the availability of warm, inviting spaces across Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes. These spaces are designed to provide a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment for anyone looking to stay warm during the day while saving on heating costs. Beyond just offering warmth, these spaces also provide access to assistance, support, and friendship, as well as opportunities to learn new skills. Information about the nearest locations can be found here.
