A senior local pharmacist is urging residents to ensure that they have enough supply of any medications they need to last them over the festive period.

With many practices and pharmacies expected to close during the Christmas holidays, it’s essential that people who need regular medicines prepare in advance and order their repeat prescription now, to avoid running out over the break.

Fiona Garnett, associate director of medicines optimisation at Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board, said:

“Many GP practices and pharmacies will have limited opening hours over the Christmas period, and some will be closed during Christmas week, and again over the New Year, making it more challenging for patients to access medicines at short notice.

“That’s why it’s important for people to plan ahead and make sure they have enough medicine for long-term conditions over Christmas and the New Year. Make sure you stay well and avoid an unnecessary stress over your medications.  Running out of essential medications could seriously affect your health.”

Most practices now accept repeat prescription requests via the NHS App or the practice website; you can contact your practice for advice on how to ensure you have the supplies you need over the holiday period.
